This trip marked our fourth visit to Guntersville this year.  The weather was cool early but heated up as the day progressed; typical for August.

August is also the ‘precursor’ month for Rat fishing on the ‘G’.  During August it can be an on again, off again affair depending on several conditions, e.g. lake water level, grass/matt condition and weather.  Unlike years past there are fewer mats on the lake this year.  Seibold Creek had no visible grass on the surface; Browns Creek had good matts in several places. Near Waterfront and all the way to Goose Pond there were good areas of matt but not in many other places.  This writer noticed a sign at the ramp warning boaters of chemical spraying in the area; that might explain the reduction in grass on the ‘G’.  I’ve also noticed the increased number of homes constructed or under construction all along the shoreline, especially north east of Goose Pond.  Hopefully Guntersville is not going the way of Logan Martin.    And as we all know, Guntersville’s great fishing is tied directly to the grass. Enough philosophising, tournament results. 

We had six (6) boats and seven (7) anglers participate in this month’s event.  After prayer and preliminaries we went fishing.  Our tournament winner, Willie LaFleur blasted off first and headed straight to the Goose Pond area. Per Mr. LaFleur top-water was the ticket.  He finished the day with 9.05#.

Second place went to Tony Spillman with ONE (1) fish, a nice 6.42# piglet.  Third place was taken by Ronald Spillman with 6.13#.  We did and excellent job this year of keeping our catches healthy, all fish were released alive to fight another day.  Good job men.
